Tangerine Orange Farming in Kenya is fast becoming one of the best choices for farmers who want good returns from fruit production. The fruit is easy to sell, people like eating it, and traders in both local and export markets are asking for more. For a long time, most farmers grew sweet oranges and lemons, but now tangerines are taking a bigger space on farms and in markets.
At Farmers Virtual Agrovet, we provide certified grafted tangerine orange seedlings at only Ksh 200 each. Our seedlings are grafted to mature faster, resist common citrus diseases, and produce uniform fruits. By starting with clean planting material, you avoid losses and secure a profitable orchard.
Why choose grafted seedlings from Farmers Virtual Agrovet?
Early fruiting from year 2–3 after planting
High yields compared to non-grafted trees
Tolerance to major citrus diseases
Consistent fruit size and sweetness
Long orchard lifespan of 20+ years
Market Opportunity
If you visit a market in Nairobi, Kisumu, or Mombasa, you will notice how quickly tangerines get sold. Shoppers like them because they are sweet and easy to peel. Shopkeepers prefer them because they do not stay long on the shelves.
In supermarkets, a kilo often sells for Sh200–250, while at the farm the same kilo goes for about Sh80–120. A one-acre orchard produces 20,000–30,000 kilos per year. At an average farm-gate price of Sh100, that translates to Sh2–3 million in sales. After production costs of Sh250,000–300,000, a farmer pockets Sh1.7–2.7 million net profit per acre.
This is why more farmers in Murang’a, Kitui, Machakos, Nakuru, Siaya, and coastal counties are planting tangerines. With irrigation, even semi-arid zones are joining in.
Ecological Requirements
Altitude: 0–2,100m above sea level
Rainfall: 800–1,200mm annually, or irrigation in dry zones
Temperature: 15–30°C
Soil: Well-drained loamy soils, pH 5.5–6.5
Sunlight: At least 6–8 hours daily
Wind: Plant windbreaks to reduce flower and fruit drop
Planting Guide
Land preparation: Clear weeds, plough, and level.
Digging holes: 60cm x 60cm x 60cm. Mix topsoil with 20kg well-rotted manure and 250g DAP fertilizer.
Spacing: 4m x 4m (about 250 trees per acre).
Planting: Place seedling upright with graft above soil. Firm the soil, water immediately.
Mulching: Apply dry grass or banana leaves, keeping mulch 10–15cm away from the stem.
Watering: Twice a week for young trees, weekly for mature ones. Drip irrigation works best.
Protection: Stake seedlings in windy areas. Fence against livestock.
Intercropping: Beans, cowpeas, or vegetables in early years, but stop once canopy spreads.
Orchard Management
Fertilization: Apply 10–20kg manure per tree yearly. Add NPK and CAN as per soil test.
Pruning: Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Maintain open canopy.
Thinning: Remove excess fruits for better size and uniformity.
Pests and diseases: Watch for citrus greening, canker, aphids, fruit flies. Use integrated pest management and certified seedlings.
Pollination: Bees are critical, avoid pesticide spraying during flowering.
Yields and Profits
Year 2–3: Light harvest begins
Year 4: 10,000–15,000kg per acre (Sh1–1.5m gross, Sh700k–1.2m net)
Year 5: 20,000–30,000kg per acre (Sh2–3m gross, Sh1.7–2.7m net)
Year 6+: 37,500–50,000kg per acre (Sh3.7–5m gross, Sh3.4–4.7m net)
Orchards remain productive for 20+ years, giving long-term income.
