Why Choose Grafted Mango Seedlings?

Grafted mango seedlings are a premium choice for any serious farmer. Unlike traditional seedlings, grafted varieties combine the strength of a hardy rootstock with the superior fruiting qualities of a carefully selected scion. This results in a mango tree that is not only more resilient but also produces higher yields of better-quality fruit, offering you the best of both worlds.

Superior Disease Resistance and Vigorous Growth

Our grafted mango seedlings are selected for their superior resistance to common mango diseases such as anthracnose and powdery mildew. The rootstocks used in grafting are chosen for their robustness and ability to withstand adverse conditions, ensuring that your trees remain healthy and productive. This means fewer losses, lower maintenance costs, and more profits for you.

Enhanced Yield and Fruit Quality

One of the primary reasons to choose our grafted mango seedlings is the enhanced yield and fruit quality they offer. The scion, selected from high-yielding, premium varieties, ensures that each tree produces an abundance of large, juicy, and flavorful mangoes. This translates to higher returns on your investment, whether you’re targeting local markets or export destinations.

Adaptability to Various Climatic Conditions

Our grafted mango seedlings are well-adapted to Kenya’s diverse climatic regions, from the coastal lowlands to the highland areas. The robust rootstock allows the trees to thrive in different soil types and withstand varying weather conditions, making them a reliable choice for farmers across the country.

Long-Term Productivity

Investing in grafted mango seedlings from Virtual Agrovet means securing long-term productivity for your orchard. These seedlings not only begin bearing fruits earlier than non-grafted counterparts but also continue to produce for many years, providing you with a steady income stream. The early fruiting characteristic is especially beneficial for farmers looking to recoup their investment quickly.

Step-by-Step Guide on Planting Grafted Mango Seedlings in Kenya

Grafted mango farming is a lucrative venture in Kenya, offering high yields and quality fruits if managed correctly. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to successfully plant and manage grafted mango seedlings:-

Grafted Mango Seedlings trees

1. Ecological Conditions

Mangoes thrive in warm tropical and subtropical climates. The ideal conditions for mango farming in Kenya include:

  • Altitude: 0 to 1,500 meters above sea level.
  • Temperature: Optimal temperatures range between 25°C and 30°C. Mangoes can tolerate higher temperatures, but frost is detrimental to their growth.
  • Rainfall: 650 to 1,200 mm of well-distributed annual rainfall is ideal. Irrigation is necessary in areas with less rainfall.

2. Soil Preparation

  • Soil Type: Mangoes grow best in well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soils rich in organic matter. They can tolerate a wide range of soils but avoid waterlogged or clay-heavy soils.
  • Soil pH: The optimal soil pH for mangoes is between 5.5 and 7.5. Conduct soil testing to determine the pH and nutrient content.
  • Soil Fertility: Incorporate well-decomposed organic manure into the soil to improve fertility. If the soil is acidic, apply lime to adjust the pH.

3. Irrigation

While mango trees are drought-tolerant, young grafted mango seedlings require regular watering to establish strong roots. Drip irrigation is recommended for efficient water use. Ensure the soil is kept moist, especially during the dry season, but avoid waterlogging.

4. Spacing and Plant Density

  • Spacing: Space grafted mango seedlings 5 by 5m to 8 by 10 meters apart along the rows. The wider spacing allows adequate space for the trees to grow and for sunlight to penetrate the canopy.
  • Plant Density: With the recommended spacing of 5 by 5m, you can plant approximately 150 to 160 mango trees per acre.

5. Digging Holes and Adding Manure

  • Hole Preparation: Dig planting holes 60 cm by 60 cm by 60 cm in size. This ensures the roots have enough space to spread and access nutrients.
  • Manure and Fertilizer: Mix the topsoil with 20 kg of well-decomposed organic manure and 200 grams of DAP (Di-ammonium Phosphate) fertilizer. Fill the holes with this mixture, leaving enough space for planting the seedling.

6. Planting the Seedlings

  • Plant the grafted mango seedlings at the onset of the rainy season or when irrigation is available.
  • Place the seedling in the center of the hole, ensuring the graft union (the point where the scion is grafted onto the rootstock) is above the soil level to prevent rot.
  • Firm the soil around the seedling and water immediately after planting.

7. Trellising and Support

Unlike passion fruit, mangoes do not require trellising. However, young seedlings may need staking to support them until they are established. Use a wooden or bamboo stake to support the seedling and tie it loosely with a soft material to avoid damaging the stem.

8. Care and Maintenance

  • Weeding: Keep the area around the mango seedlings weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
  • Pruning: Regularly prune the mango trees to shape them, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. Proper pruning also encourages fruit production.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Monitor the trees for pests like fruit flies and diseases like anthracnose. Use appropriate insecticides and fungicides as needed.
  • Fertilization: Top-dress with CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate) or other suitable fertilizers every 3-6 months, depending on soil fertility and tree growth.

9. Harvesting

Grafted mango trees begin bearing fruit within 2 to 3 years after planting, much earlier than non-grafted varieties. The harvesting season in Kenya typically runs from November to March, depending on the variety and location.

  • Fruit Maturity: Mangoes are ready for harvest when they change color, develop a fruity aroma, and the stem near the fruit becomes slightly soft.
  • Harvesting Technique: Harvest mangoes by hand or using a picking pole to avoid damaging the fruits.

10. Expected Yield per Acre

  • First 3-5 Years: In the early years, yield per tree can range from 50 to 100 fruits per season, depending on the variety and care.
  • Mature Trees (6+ Years): Mature grafted mango trees can produce between 300 to 600 fruits per tree per season.
  • Yield Per Acre: On average, you can expect a yield of 10 to 15 tons per acre, depending on the variety and management practices.

11. Expected Profits per Acre

  • Revenue: If mangoes are sold at an average price of Ksh 30 per kilogram and assuming an average yield of 12.5 tons (12,500 kg) per acre, the gross income would be approximately Ksh 375,000 per acre.
  • Costs: The initial establishment costs, including seedlings, manure, fertilizers, pesticides, and labor, can range from Ksh 50,000 to Ksh 70,000 per acre. Maintenance costs in subsequent years are lower, typically around Ksh 30,000 to Ksh 50,000 per acre.
  • Net Profit: Subtracting the costs from the revenue, you can expect a net profit of Ksh 300,000 to Ksh 325,000 per acre in the first few years. As the trees mature and yields increase, profits can rise significantly.
